Duct Sealing

Duct work is used to distribute conditioned air throughout the house. The EPA estimates that in a typical house, about 20 - 30 percent of the air that moves through the duct system is lost due to leaks, holes, and poorly connected ducts. The result is higher energy bills and keeping the house comfortable. Duct systems that are in attics are subject to extreme temperatures. In the summer time the attics can reach temperatures of 120-140 degrees, turning your duct system into heating lines. In the winter time the attics can be extremely cold and turn your ducts into cooling lines.

How do you know if your duct system is performing poorly

1. High utility bills
2. Rooms that are difficult to heat and cool
3. Stuffy rooms that never seem to feel comfortable
4. Ducts that are located in the attic or crawl space

Two ways that we seal ducts

Two ways that we seal ducts

Duct Encapsulation

Southern Attic Systems recommends spray foaming the ducts. Spray foaming the ducts accomplishes two things. First it seals the duct system by spraying a continuous layer of spray foam over it. Second it provides more insulation to the duct system so that the duct system is not acting as a heating line in the summer time and a cooling line in the winter time.

Aeroseal

For duct systems that are not accessible (between floors of two story homes) or large commercial properties, Southern Attic Systems recommends Aeroseal. Aeroseal is an aerosol glue that is blown into the duct system that will seal every hole up to 5/8" gap from the inside. The glue is non toxic and provides a seal that will last for the entirety of the duct system.

When homeowners look to improve their home's energy efficiency and comfort, they often overlook the duck system. The duct system plays a vital role in your homes comfort and efficiency.

If you are experiencing uneven temperatures in your home or high heating and cooling bills, leaky duct work could be the source your problems. Contact Southern Attic Systems for your free estimate
